    A recent survey reveals rise in gambling activity among individuals with gambling problems during Christmas, alongside record-breaking demand for GamCare’s support services.

    Key points:

    GamCare has highlighted a sharp rise in gambling-related issues during the Christmas period, supported by findings from a new survey conducted by YouGov.

    The research indicates that 59% of people experiencing gambling problems are more likely to gamble during the festive season than at other times of the year. This represents a significant increase from 37% in 2023.

    Last December, GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline experienced a 39% rise in calls and online chats compared to the previous year, making it the busiest Christmas period on record.

    The charity attributes this to financial pressures, early December paydays and heightened gambling opportunities due to high-profile sporting events.

    The survey also revealed that 53% of those gambling at harmful levels spent money earmarked for seasonal essentials such as gifts and food on gambling.

    Furthermore, 56% reported increased feelings of isolation caused by gambling and 65% expressed concerns that someone in their household might overspend on gambling during the holidays.

    Good to know: Helpline advisers have also observed a correlation between early paydays in December and an uptick in gambling activity, as well as the influence of alcohol and social pressures

    Mark Weiss, GamCare’s Deputy Chief Executive, noted: “At GamCare, our priority is making sure that people who need support for gambling harms receive it as quickly and effectively as possible. With a record 55,000 people calling the National Gambling Helpline last year alone, now is the right time for this important clarity on the future system.”

    In November 2024, GamCare welcomed the UK Government’s statutory levy on the gambling industry, which aims to fund research, prevention and treatment initiatives. The levy follows record-breaking call volumes to the National Gambling Helpline, which received 55,000 contacts over the past year, with nearly half citing online slot games as a primary concern.
